Magnetic shielding

Electromagnetic shielding is the practice of reducing the electromagnetic field in a space by blocking the field with barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials. What material will block a magnetic field? Does shielding electrically shield magnetically too? What would be the most efficient material for EMI shielding? What is meant by diamagnetic shielding?

In contrast, the metal knife acts as a magnetic shield , meaning the force lines coming from the pole of the magnet do not pass through it. Instea they are gathered in, travel down the metal strap, and re-enter the magnet at the other pole. Materials that gather magnetic lines of force are said to be permeable,. Magnetic shielding refers to the attempt to isolate or block the magnetic field of the MRI magnet. This can be done to prevent unwanted interference from the MRI magnet on nearby electronic devices.

The purpose is most often to prevent magnetic fields from interfering with electrical devices. Specialized magnetic shielding materials usually have a higher relative permeability, but a lower saturation point. Permeability is the degree of magnetization of a material that responds linearly to an applied magnetic field. The list of such factors includes: size and shape of the source of the magnetic fiel size and shape of the shielded area, seams in the shielding material, frequency of the magnetic fiel distance from shield to source, orientation of shield to the source, thickness and heat treatment of shielding material, etc. A mu-metal shield , like a can, is slipped over the sides of the tube.

Magnetic shielding

Suppose you want to contain the magnetic field within an area and not allow it to spread out and affect other devices or your TV or other things. Home Worldwide leading manufacturer of EMC (electromagnetic compatibility), EMI (electromagnetic interference) and RFI(radio frequency interference) shielding solutions. MCFis a low cost magnetic shielding film made from an amorphous cobalt alloy for shielding of low-frequency alternating magnetic fields.

It also shields low-frequency electric alternating fields (LF) and high-frequency fields (HF). The ability to conduct magnetic lines of flux is called permeability, and in a magnetic shiel the degree of permeability is expressed numerically. The standard is free space , which has a permeability value of one. The most effective commercially available magnetic shielding material is called mu-metal, and is an alloy of percent copper, percent chromium, percent nickel, and percent iron. The maximum permeability of mu-metal is about.

This material also possesses a particularly low retentivity and coercivity. Rigid (passive) magnetic shielding is divided into two fundamental types based upon the magnetic and conductive properties of the shielding materials: flux-entrapment shields and lossy shields. The electronics enclosures shielding solutions has variety of products such as elastomers, absorbers, metal d-subs, conductive foam shielding and so on. Magnetic Flux Density: Describes the concentration of magnetic lines of force in a material. It is made up of nickel, iron, and a balance of other metals depending upon the particular formula.

The effectiveness of mu-metal shielding decreases with the alloy's permeability, which drops off at both low field strengths an due to saturation, at high field strengths. Thus, mu-metal shields are often made of several enclosures one inside the other, each of which successively reduces the field inside it. Shielding performance is compared.
