Hagia sophia architecture

It is an architectural intelligence and the first masterpiece in Byzantine architecture. It was miraculously made weightless due to the continuous chain of arched windows under it, which also served to flood the entire interior with sunlight. It is considered to be the most important Byzantine structure in the world and one of the world’s great monuments.


It’s considered as the most important historic monument in Istanbul. Once a church, the structure was later converted into a mosque, since then it has become a public museum.

Entered from the northwest through an outer and inner narthex, the church consists of a rectangular nave flanked by an aisle and gallery on the sides and an apsidal sanctuary, projecting southeast. It was first built in the fourth century and inaugurated in 360. After a fire in 4it was replaced by the second church which burned again in 532.

It was constructed in an incredibly short time between 5and 5during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian. It remains the symbol of a city that now spans two great continents and two historic cultures. The first was built as a traditional Latin colonnade basilica with galleries and a timber roof, inaugurated on February 3by Constantius II. It burned down during a riot in 404.

The ceiling stands 1feet high by 1feet across. First constructed as the principal church of Constantinople in the fourth century, and destroyed twice by fire, it was rebuilt in the mid-sixth century. The dome seems rendered weightless by the unbroken arcade of arched windows under it, which help flood the colorful interior with light. When the Ottoman Empire took over, it was converted into a mosque, adorned with minarets and Arabic writings, acting as a template for other Ottoman mosques. Constantine I built a small church where a pagan temple existed before in the honour.


The unique Byzantine atrium surviving today is unfortunately close to the visitors.
