Pressure relief valve working principle

What will happen if the oil pressure relief valve sticks open? How does a pressure protection valve work? Is your water heater pressure relief valve bad? This type of valves sets a limit on the rise of pressure within a hydraulic line.


Pressure Relief Valve – Working Principle. In normal operation the valve is closed and no fluid passes through.

But if the pressure in the line exceeds the limit the valve opens to relieve the pressure. This protects expensive machinery such as motors,pumps and actuators from becoming damaged from high pressure. The working principle of direct acting relief valve is simply designed for controlling hydraulic pressure.


The hydraulic direct acting relief valve is often equipped in various hydraulic systems as pressure regulation or keeping system pressure in normal operation stage. A safety valve for pressure relief generally has a working principle similar to that of a conventional safety relief valve. The safety valve is actuated by inlet static pressure and characterized by rapid opening or pop action (Figure 11). Most commonly, pressure relief valves employ a spring loaded “poppet” valve as a valve element. The poppet includes an elastomeric seal or, in some high pressure designs a thermoplastic seal, which is configured to make a seal on a valve seat.

The disk is held in place until the system pressure increases to the point when the disc pop-off the seat. The spindle guides the up and down motion of the disc. The adjusting screw is used to adjust the valve set point.


If the spring tension changes over period of time, certified personnel would reset the adjusting screw. The relief valve is designed or set to open at a predetermined set pressure to protect pressure vessels and other equipment from being subjected to pressures that exceed their design limits. The relief valve’s setpoint is adjusted to a level established by the lowest maximum pressure rating of any of the lower pressure system components.


Overpressure occurs when the pressure of a system is above the setpoint of the device controlling its pressure. Their primary purpose is to protect the tank against rupturing or imploding. Without an opening or a controlled opening,. When installed under a pressure relief valve , a breaking pin device can be reset without removing the pressure relief valve.


The relief valve which is designed to relieve at this pressure opens up (the pressure inside the vessel is high enough to work against the spring in the valve ). The pressure rises in the vessel to the set pressure. The material vents out (to flare or to atmosphere) at a rate sufficient enough to not overpressure the vessel.

Like other pressure relief valves (PRV), pilot operated relief valves (PORV) are used for emergency relief during overpressure events (e.g., a tank gets too hot and the expanding fluid increases the pressure to dangerous levels). The difference between PORV and conventional PRV is that pilot valves use system pressure to seal the valve.
