Chilled water air conditioning system flow diagram

If the flow rate is high In the secondary loop then all the chilled water will flow into the secondary loop and the return line will flow straight back to the chillers. Conventional chilled water plants distribute water at constant flow rate , regardless of the actual cooling demand. Water chillers are used in a variety of air conditioning and process cooling applications. They cool water that is subsequently transported by pumps and pipes.


As its name suggest, this system makes use of water as its secondary refrigerant.

A PCB consists of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger, contained in a housing (or casing), that is suspended from the ceiling (Figure 1). The heat in the air is absorbed into the coils and then into the water. Chilled water passes through the tubes.


The water is pumped back to the chiller to have the heat removed. Water is non-corrosive, has specific heat value, fluid , non-toxic and is cheap. How do chilled water systems work?

They reject the building heat to the ambient with an air -cooled condensing coil. A great benefit of a chilled water air conditioning system ( chiller ) is that the system is very forgiving, unlike a conventional central air conditioner.


In a conventional system , zones cannot be too small, or enough air flow across the evaporator coil cannot be acieve and the system freezes up. Not a problem with a chilled water system. The “chilled water” leaves the evaporator at around 6°C (4°F) and is pushed around the building by the chilled water pump.


The chilled water flows up the height of the building to each floor in pipes known as “risers”. It cools water to between and degrees Fahrenheit ( and degrees Celsius). The diagram above shows a cooling cycle of a heat pump DX system. The valve used is a reversing valve that reverses the refrigerant flow to enable the heat pump to run cooling or heating.


A normal valve is used when a cooling only system is needed.

This type of system is also known as the vapor compression systems. CHW systems also may be used for removing process or other heating loads. Usually a sensing device is used to compare the actual state (e.g., temperature) with a target state. Then the control system draws a conclusion what action has to be taken (e.g., start the blower).


The refrigeration circuit is the most technical part of how a chiller works. In the case of chillers, heat is taken from the fluid being chilled and transferred to the ambient air. As an important subsystem in air - conditioning system , water system connects the chiller and terminal equipment.


Therefore, it is necessary to develop an accurate thermal model for chilled water pipe to create the suitable indoor temperature and humidity environment. The exception is they use water in the coil.
