Dewatering methods

What are different types of dewatering? What is dewatering, when is it use and methods? How does a dewatering system work?


Earth channels used for dewatering could also be protected with ditch linings, and additional protection should be placed to reduce water velocities and minimize erosion. There are four important dewatering methods one should be aware of: Wellpoint method of dewatering, Eductor wells, Open sump pumping and. Dewatering Techniques Dewatering involves controlling groundwater by pumping, to locally lower groundwater levels in the vicinity of the excavation.

The simplest form of dewatering is sump pumping , where groundwater is allowed to enter the excavation where it is then collected in a sump and pumped away by robust solids handling pumps. One of the most common dewatering methods is using dewatering bags. They are made of durable geotextile fabric which can filter water by removing sediments. Usually, dewatering bags are used on construction sites, dredging operations or areas with high water table near the shoreline.


This method is more suitable for dewatering the pit of a foundation. In this method , drains and sump of suitable size are constructed by the sides or in one corner of the foundation pit. The drains collect subsoil water from the sides and the enclosed area of foundation pit and convey it into a sump.


This dewatering method uses rings or lines of closely-spaced wells.

Thus adopting the right method of dewatering for a particular ground condition is always an important and a difficult decision to make.
