Pile foundation types

What conditions require use of pile foundation? What are the different types of pile founations used? What type of soils need a pile of foundation? Types of Pile Foundation.

Pile foundations can be classified based on function, materials and installation process, etc.

Followings are the types of pile foundation used in construction: Based on Function or Use. There are two fundamental types of pile foundations (based on structural behaviour), each of which works in its own way. In end bearing piles, the bottom end of the pile rests on a layer of especially strong soil or rock. The load of the building is transferred through the pile onto the strong layer. Piles may be classified in a number of ways based on different criteria: 1. Classification of Pile Based on Function or action.

The following classification is based on function or action. There are two types of vibro piles formed by the vibro process (1) standard vibro-pile (2) vibro-expanded pile.

Standard Vibro-Pile : In these piles, a steel tube , fitted with a cast iron shoe is driven in the ground by the hammer. There are three types of pile foundations according to their construction methods which are driven piles, cast-in-situ piles , and driven and cast-in-situ piles. Driven pile foundations can be made from concrete, steel or timber. These piles are prefabricated before placing at the construction site.

Difficult to splice, vulnerable to damage in hard driving,. Precast concrete piles may be made using ordinary reinforcement or they may be. In general, a composite pile is made up of two or more sections. Cast in place concrete piles are the most type commonly used for foundations due to the great diversity available for pouring concrete and the introduction of the pile into the soil.

Compaction piles are used to compact loose granular soil, thus increasing their. Constructional Features of Pile Foundations : Three types of materials are used for pile construction: (i) Timber (ii) Steel (iii) Concrete. Mostly concrete piles are used.

Timber and steel piles are prefabricate having cross-sectional areas of rectangular, square, circular and H-shape (for steel only). Pre-Cast Concrete Piles: 2. They are formed by long, slender, columnar elements typically made from steel or reinforced concrete , or sometimes timber. Dynamic Load Test The ultimate strength of each pile must fulfill the structural and geotechnical limits for a safe foundation to perform as required.

Individual Footing or Isolated Footing.

Spread footings or Strip footings and Wall footings. Raft or Mat Foundations. Drilled Shafts or Caisson Foundation. GRAN Hardesty and Hanover This paper presents a review of the current practice and usage of the numerous types of pile in general construction. Information on this sub ject was obtained from a review of existing literature and from field ex perience.

Pier foundation are shallower in depth than the pile foundation. The soil is a stiff clay that occurs large resistance for driving the bearing pile. In a sense, this pile acts like a column. Deep foundation Driven foundations.

Prefabricated piles are driven into the ground using a pile driver. A pile machine in Amsterdam. Micropiles, also called mini piles, are often used for underpinning. Sheet piling, by a bridge, was used to block a.
