Lap joint flange

Lap Joint pipe flanges are often used for applications that require frequent dismantling. Sizes above are produced as lap joints to slip on dimensions. Forged flanges have better strength than cast flanges. Lap Joint flanges are commonly produced and stocked in several different materials.

They are often called Back Up, Loose Ring or Van Stone Flanges.

These flanges are used behind and in conjunction with a Stub End. The lap joint flange floats on the pipe which allows allows for easy bolting. For example, metallic pipe that has been plastic lining may have lap joint flanges. Using lap joint flanges might be an option for saving costs when the piping is made of exotic materials.

By using a lap joint flange , the wetted materials would consist of the exotic materials and the flange would be carbon steel. Lap Flange Materials - Pipelines, Piping and. They may be used at all pressures and are available in a full size range.

Bolting pressure is transmitted to the gasket by the pressure of the flange against the back of the pipe lap (Stub End).

Lap Joint Flanges are similar to other types of industrial flanges , but it does not have a raised face. The total initial cost of a lap joint flange along with a stub end is around one-third higher than that of comparable welding neck flanges. We provide ANSI, API, and AWWA pipe flanges in carbon steel, stainless steel, alloys, and chrome steel.

When do we use slip-on flange, a weld neck flange or a lap joint flange? What is a flange bearing? In this form, the pipe is usually welded to this stub end so the lap joint flange can rotate freely around the stub end. Some advantages of the lap joint flange is ease of application to the pipe system, and with the lack of contact with internal fluids of the pipe, the flange has an extra extended life. Lap joint flanges are unique in that they are made of two pieces, the flange itself and the stub end.

However, lap joint flanges are not widely used in high pressure conditions, but it is generally suitable for piping systems where the assembly and disassembly of the pipeline is frequent. Lap thickness is larger than or equal to pipe wall thickness. Outside corner radius is accommodated to the lap joint flange , inside corner is squared. Suit for slip on flanges acting as lap joint flanges. Lap flange is having two components, a stub en and a loose backing flange.

Stub end is butt-welded to the pipe and Backing flange freely moves over the pipe. A ring flange fits loosely around the stub en permitting easy flange alignment of the bolt holes. A lap joint flange is also called Van Stone or Stub Flange.

The stub ends are available in three styles (Types A, B, and C) and two lengths (Short and Long). The biggest advantage of lap joint flanges is that the flanges are not welded in place however. This allows the flanges to swivel freely to easily align bolt holes.
