Types of shoring systems

Types of Shoring Systems – Which One is Best? Shoring with Pipe Jacks and Steel Beams The term shoring applies to building temporary support where the original support has been removed. Common shoring methods include: Soldier Pile and Lagging.


Soil Nails and ShotCrete. A choice of Timber or Aluminium materials.

Contiguous Pile Shoring. This temporary shoring should be provided to unsafe structures till such times as they have been made stable. Raking or Inclined Shores. Flying or Horizontal Shores. The flying shoring technique focuses on a horizontal strut or shore placed between the walls, secured to wall plates and supported by a network of needles, or shorter beams, and steel construction cleats.


Additional inclined struts brace into wall plates and angle upward to the horizontal shore to provide additional strength. There are two basic types of shoring, timber and aluminum hydraulic. Shoring or shielding is used when the location or depth of the cut makes sloping back to the maximum allowable slope impractical.

Shoring systems consist of posts, wales , struts , and sheeting. A Shoring System engineer will have to guard against an unstable excavation bottom especially when this is below water level. Some known permanent and temporary shoring system are steel sheet piling , soldier piles and lagging , jet or chemical grouting , secant or tangent piles and soil walls. A shoring system such as piles and lagging or shotcrete will support the surrounding loads until the underground levels of the building are constructed. Commonly used shoring equipment includes post shores, shoring beams, and timber jacks.


Shoring entails the construction of a temporary safety structure to prop up walls in a building that has become unstable due either to foundational expansion or natural disaster.
