Types of fire pumps

Here are some types of fire pumps you should work with your fire protection partner to evaluate and install. What is a diesel fire pump? Horizontal Split Cases are the fire pumps you will see most often. Without operational fire pumps , you will not have adequate water pressure to help contain or extinguish fires.

This, in turn, can make it more difficult for your sprinkler system to extinguish a fire. Here are four different types of fire pumps that are commonly found in commercial settings.

Fire pumps are also needed if fire protection water supply is provided from a ground level water storage tank. Types of pumps used for fire service include: horizontal split case , vertical split case , vertical inline , vertical turbine , and end suction. Commonly used in the fire service as a primer pump ƒRotary gear.

Two gears that rotate in a tightly meshed pattern forming pockets As each gear tooth reaches the discharge chamber, the air or water contained in that pocket is forced out of the pump. Most fire-pumps are listed for fire pump application, which means they are tested and certified by accredited laboratories and listed by authorized institutions such as VdS, UL, FM, LPCB etc. Types of fire pumps include: horizontal split case , vertical split case , vertical in-line , vertical turbine , and end suction. In use for over a century, centrifugal pumps are the most common type of fire truck pump.

Water enters the pump through an inlet, then goes into the center of an impeller spinning on a shaft.

There are main types of diaphragm pumps: Air-operated and Mechanical. They are also used for chemical transfer, de-watering underground coal mines , food manufacturing or where the liquid being pumped has a high solids content or high viscosity. The horizontal split case fire pump is the one that is most commonly found in most commercial buildings. Electric motors, diesel engines or even steam turbines (for big pumps ) are the acceptable drivers for fire fighting pumps.

All play very important roles in the flow of water through the pump and into the discharge hose for firefighting operations. Fire pump mechanisms The most common types are horizontal split case pumps and vertical turbine pumps. Some applications for lower flows may include end suction pumps or vertical inline pumps. Many fire systems also use a jockey pump.

Once you have calculated the gpm and psi requirements for the pump, you need to determine the type of pump that works best for the job. The three most widely used pumps are horizontal split case, inline and vertical turbine. Used for cooling water, plant make-up water, potable water distribution, fire pumps , pipelines, and other main process flows. Normally not used for liquids containing solids.

Available in alloys for corrosive services. This pump type permits much higher flow rates than end suction pumps. Choosing the Right Fire Pump.

These components include the impeller, bearings, pump shaft, and so on. HSC pumps have two bearings, located on either side of the impeller, which are useful to withstand the large amount of vibration and thrust forces often caused by water turbulence in the suction piping. The turn-on for the main fire pump is a water pressure switch.

This loss of water in the sprinkler system causes the pressure to drop. When the pressure drops, the main fire pump turns on. Designing Electrical Systems for Fire Pumps Since fire pumps are considered life safety equipment, they must be reliable. When designing or installing electrical power supplies for fire pumps and their accessories, you must apply special rules as listed in (NFPA 70), the National Electrical Code (NEC), and the Standard for Centrifugal Fire Pumps (CFP) NFPA 20.

Centrifugal pumps are the most popular fire pumps and are classified as nonpositive-displacement pumps because they do not pump a definite amount of water with each revolution. Rather, this type of pump imparts velocity to the water and converts it to pressure within the pump itself. Densely populated areas depend on a Type fire apparatus to efficiently maneuver to the call and deploy an array of ladders to reach fires in elevated buildings. Non listed pumps may be end suction type. With over years of progressive Peerless designing, engineering and manufacturing, our pumps are proven with thousands of single and multiple vertical pump unit installations around the world. Peerless Pump is one of the largest manufacturers of vertical pumps in the industry.
